Supporting a fair business climate for consumers and traders.

The Office of Fair Trading's role within Commerce is to safeguard consumer rights and to advise business and traders on fair and ethical practice.  One of its major objectives is to inform and educate the State's consumers and traders so that consumers can make informed decisions and traders comply with the law.  The Office provides:

  • consumer help, including information on buying or selling residential property, the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords, buying products, services and cars, consumer credit, rental bonds and advice on refunds and repairs;
  • business and trader services, including accommodation and property services, information on how to trade fairly, information on registering your business, licences and certificates and the Home Building Service;
  • encouragement towards the formation and development of co-operatives and assistance to community groups wishing to establish themselves as associations; and
  • specialised services including aboriginal tenancy renting services and the Register of Encumbered Vehicles (REVS).
